Game Jam Day 2

Date: 08/01/2019
Hours: 10:30am-4pm (4 hours)
What I Did:
For the second day of the Game Jam I started to focus more on the humans since I focused on the mythical creatures the first day. I tried to find hairstyles for the parents based on styles from the 1950s and some designs of my own, I used a template for the heads and then used that to draw the hair on top of instead of creating multiple different heads, and this sped up my process a lot. I also blocked out the colours to create my pieces, this made it much faster rather than trying to draw it by strands. Researching into hair whilst creating these pieces also helped a lot and helped me understand the shape of the hair.
I then went onto creating a piece based on the human’s child, in the piece I wanted to show that she was turning into a Harpy and how she’s upset by it. I made it so that she covered her face to hide her tears, visual storytelling is an area that I wish to heavily improve on and I feel I managed to be able to tell a story in that piece. However, I do feel that I still need to do a lot more research to understand how to convey certain emotions better. I also felt that I was able to draw the hair well and also make it look like it stands out rather than flat, I did this by giving highlights to the darker parts of the hair. I also did this with the wings and I’m also proud with how it turned out. What I feel that I need to improve on is lighting, I need to decide where the light is coming from and make it reflect correctly. Right now it feels like I’m showing the reflection wherever I please.

Tone Death Day 11

Date: 25/01/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, 6:30pm-7pm (7 hours) What I did:Today I focused on making some final adjustments to Todd's turnabout, why I did this was because based on feedback I changed his hand so it was then bigger and easier to model. How I did this get reference of a hand where all the fingers were spaced out, the reason why is because if all the fingers were spaced out it would be easier to see each individual finger and thus easier to model. This resulted in the hand being larger, however that did not affect the overall look. I also made this change to Charlie since his hand was in the same situation so I made the change to his hands too. After making the adjustments I went onto finishing off the initial thumbnails for the storyboard. I set out to sketch the outline, the reason why was since these were the initial concepts it would make more sense to keep them rough since the likelihood of them changing would be very high. I managed to sketch out t...

Tone Death Day 2

Date: 16/01/2019 Hours: 9am-12am, 9pm-10pm (4 hours) What I did: Today I focused on using the moodboards I created the previous and applying what I learnt to my work. I start by sketching out possible facial expressions for Charlie, Why I did this was to get an understanding on how his face would look in whilst he is conveying different, such as what position and angle would his nose be at. Creating these sketches helped me get a better understanding of how to use facial expressions to convey certain emotions. I also went onto creating full body of Charlie to get a visual understanding of his appearance, I used the another moodboard I created looking at stylised characters and used that as a reference for when creating Charlie. I started off by creating silhouettes, why I did this was to get his shape down before trying to do any detailed pieces. I then went onto making a more detailed full body of Charlie after deciding on a silhouette. Areas that I feel that I could have improv...

Tone Death Day 18

Date: 1/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm (6 hours) What I did: Today I focused on starting and finishing the turnaround for the older version of Charlie, when he's 85. The reason why I started to now was because me and my teammate have started creating for thumbnails for the final act of the animation and it focuses on the old version of Charlie, I thought it would be best if I focused on creating the young version of Charlie and Todd for when doing the first two acts. However, I am not sure if I would have taken less time if I did all the characters and turnarounds at the same time, nonetheless, I manged to create this turnaround much faster than the other two. The reason why is that I copied the shape of young Charlie and then altered it to show that he had gotten older, examples would be that he has shrunk somewhat in his old age, wrinkles and his hair is gone only leaving the outline. I am pleased with the quality and also how fast I was able to finish the turn...
