Tone Death Day 28

Date: 12/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-10am, 11am-12pm, 1pm-4:30pm (6 hours) What I did: Today I focused on getting my references complete for my journal and updating the turnaround for the younger version of Charlie. I started off today by going through each of my journal entries to see if I had used references where I needed to. Why is because adding quotes either from books or sites can help me back up my point rather than me saying anything and it coming off as unreliable and made up. I made a list of sites I used and took quotes from and then turned them into Harvard references, how I did this was by using the UWE site and using the templates and instructions given to me so my references are correct. The reason why I had to update the turnaround for Charlie was because of the t-pose in the concept. The t-pose did not match to the scale of Charlie's head, arms and legs, I should have noticed this when first creating it. Not noticing this resulted in the modeller not being a...

Tone Death Day 27

Date: 11/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm, 6pm -8pm (8 hours) What I did: Today I focused less on sketches and more on re-creating a character for the animation. Why I had to re-create a character was because the animation didn't feel very inclusion so a recommendation was to get rid of Todd and turn the child into a girl. I m happy to be working on a female character and why is because I have never really drawn or designed a female character before and it has been something that I've wanted to do for some time. I started off by making some designs for possible hairstyles then based on feedback I would use the one people liked the most. The bottom left style was chosen, in these designs I also wanted to add some hair dye. Why was because it is an aspect that hasn't been touched on in my designs before. I then went onto creating turnaround for the character, so they could be modelled afterwards. I made sure to use what I have learnt in masterclass with...

Tone Death Day 26

Date: 10/02/2019 Hours: 8am-10:30am, 10:31am- 2:01pm (6 hours) What I did: Today I focused on watching two more films and then doing more possible sketches for the storyboard. I started off watching "The Revenant", first thing I noticed was how the camera focuses on the character's faces to the point they are talking about at least half of the screen. Why I felt this was worthy of being pointed is due to the fact I haven't had the camera get that close to Charlie's face, so I will try this out. I will also be a good opportunity to show his facial expression too. In certain scenes the film the music rises to the point the voices of the character are almost completely drowned out or there is no music and the only sound of the forest and the character's breathe. I will consult my team with my different ideas to how music and sound could be approached in the animation. Why is because it could perhaps give them ideas of their own and then there's more room ...

Tone Death Day 25

Date: 9/02/2019 Hours: 8:26am-11:09am, 11:10am-14:27pm (6 hours) What I did: Today I focused on watching two films and then creating some sketches based on what I learned and was inspired by. I started off by watching "Terminator 2: Judgement Day". I picked up on the fact that two character's faces get quite close to each other, why I picked up on this was because I've mainly focused on Charlie and death either being in different shots or in the same, but at a distance. Making it so that death is in Charlie's face could make the shot feel more claustrophobic and then I can experiment with Charlie's facial expression during that scene, would he be scared, intimidated or interested? I also noticed that in some parts of the film Sarah Connor starts to narrate over the film talking about John Connor, this isn't related to the storyboard. However, why I felt that it was worth pointing out was because death could perhaps narrate over the animation, perhaps a...

Tone Death Day 24

Date: 7/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-10:30am, 11am-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm (6 hours 30 minutes) What I did: Today I focused on doing more research for my journal and thumbnails for the storyboard. Why I focused on doing more research was so that I could add more quotes to my journal, this would be so that I can external quotes to explain why something is important or describe something I'm using or going to use. This is so I can either back up what I have said and also make sure that it doesn't look like I'm making anything up whilst I go along with the journal. We are reaching the of visualising how the animation will act out, me and my teammate focused on adding some thumbnails between other thumbnails. The reason why was to help explain more was is happening, thumbnails that I drew were shots of Charlie's dishes. Why dishes was to show that time has passed, so these dishes would be stacked, dirty and not been cleaned for some time, also a shot of a cereal bowl with milk still...

Tone Death Day 23

Date: 6/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm, 6:15pm-8:15pm (8 hours) What I did: Today I focused on finalising the thumbnails for the storyboard. Before starting any drawings I looked into some more people that suffered through adversity and still made an impact. I looked at Ludwig van Beethoven, the reason why is because he fits the theme of the animation very well since in his life his hearing started to fade. However, that did not stop him from composing and playing in public. I also looked into Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks who were both activists in the civil rights movement. Rosa Parks was famous for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on the bus, which was pivotal in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Martin Luther King Jr. led the boycott, he was also very famous for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. The reason why I wanted to look at these two is because of the work they have done in the past despite the time and still m...

Tone Death Day 22

Date: 5/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-10:30am, 11am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm, 6:15pm-8:45pm (8 hours) What I did: Today I focused on continuing with creating thumbnails and also touching up the turnaround of Charlie when he's 85. Why I had to touch up the turnaround was the I received some more feedback about how his feet still didn't look correct. After revisiting the feet I checked in again with how they look and they wee happy with how they look now. When researching the feet yesterday I should've thought more about the position of Charlie's feet, why is because this cost time today to work on it more when I should've got it done yesterday. Now when I research in the future I will make sure it is relevant to what I am doing and it helps me vastly. After this I continued to work on the storyboard, I started off by drawing both Charlie and death facing the screen. The reason why is because I saw that from "Death in Paradise" and said I would try it out. ...

Tone Death Day 21

Date:4/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-10:30am, 11am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, 6:15pm-8:15pm (8 hours) What I did: Today I focused on updating the older version of Charlie's turnaround and continuing with creating thumbnails for the third act. Why I had to update the turnaround was because I received feedback on it and how to show more of a difference between old and young Charlie. Changes I made were giving him some more weight, removing some hair and adding some stubble. Also make some changes to his shoes. I started of by removing hair from the top of his head and extending how far it goes out on the sides, since it looked shaved before. I then added some weight around his stomach since I though he would be more top heavy, that's why his legs look almost the same, I extended out his thighs. I gave him stubble then faded the layer so it doesn't stand out to much. The way his feet looked before didn't look right based on feedback, so what I did was look at reference of shoes to help me...

Tone Death Day 20

Date: 3/2/2019 Hours: 8:25am-16pm, 16:25pm-16:50pm (8 hours 30 minutes) What I did: Today I focused on watching more of "Broadchurch" to get ideas for possible shots and effects that could be used in the animation. In a scene there are two characters talking to each other with the camera facing the back of one of them. This could be done when Charlie is talking to death, the camera could be facing Charlie with death's back towards the screen. The reason why for this position is so the viewer focuses primarily on Charlie so they can see his face and body language to what is happening. There are also scenes where the camera cuts between two characters talking, one appears on the right side of the screen and the other on the left, why I point this out is that it's another possibility with what can be done when Charlie is talking to death, Charlie could be on the right so represent a biased mindset and death on the left to show an unbiased one. It would also be easier...

Tone Death Day 19

Date:2/2/2019 Hours: 8:14am-10:14am, 10:16am-11:53am, 12:35pm-17:28pm (8 hours 30 minutes) What I did: Today I focused on watching more films, why is to get more inspiration and ideas for what I could do with the storyboard. Firstly, I watched "Mad Max: Fury Road", what I learned from watching this film was the when Max is first shown the camera starts to slowly zoom in on him whilst he has his back turned and when it gets close enough he turns his head around to reveal his face. I thought about how this could be done with Charlie and also incorporate it with the ability of the camera to travel through the house giving that sense of the viewer being the camera. I noticed that the camera doesn't stay still, why this is important is because I have to think about whether that is something we should go for or go with a different style because it doesn't suit the theme of the animation. I'd rather go with a similar route that "Blade Runner 2049" goes with...

Tone Death Day 18

Date: 1/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm (6 hours) What I did: Today I focused on starting and finishing the turnaround for the older version of Charlie, when he's 85. The reason why I started to now was because me and my teammate have started creating for thumbnails for the final act of the animation and it focuses on the old version of Charlie, I thought it would be best if I focused on creating the young version of Charlie and Todd for when doing the first two acts. However, I am not sure if I would have taken less time if I did all the characters and turnarounds at the same time, nonetheless, I manged to create this turnaround much faster than the other two. The reason why is that I copied the shape of young Charlie and then altered it to show that he had gotten older, examples would be that he has shrunk somewhat in his old age, wrinkles and his hair is gone only leaving the outline. I am pleased with the quality and also how fast I was able to finish the turn...
