What I did: Today I focused on watching two films and then creating some sketches based on what I learned and was inspired by.
I started off by watching "Terminator 2: Judgement Day". I picked up on the fact that two character's faces get quite close to each other, why I picked up on this was because I've mainly focused on Charlie and death either being in different shots or in the same, but at a distance. Making it so that death is in Charlie's face could make the shot feel more claustrophobic and then I can experiment with Charlie's facial expression during that scene, would he be scared, intimidated or interested? I also noticed that in some parts of the film Sarah Connor starts to narrate over the film talking about John Connor, this isn't related to the storyboard. However, why I felt that it was worth pointing out was because death could perhaps narrate over the animation, perhaps after Charlie has gone deaf or at the end of the animation. This would allow me to try out possible lines that death could say and research into scripts. Something I noticed in the film was the use of orange and blue, I wasn't sure whether this was meant to represent anything and I've noticed in for "Blade Runner 2049" too, so what I will do is research into this to find out if it has any meaning.
I then watched "Logan". I noticed that towards the start of the film the camera follows Logan's footsteps, why I point this out is because I have tried to get some shots of Charlie's feet (shoes) but never thought whether I could focus on them whilst he's walking. I could then incorporate this with the animation book and learn how show his current emotions with just his walk pattern. Something else I noticed was when there's a funeral it was raining, why I noticed this is because in a lot of other films it tends to rain during sad or emotional scenes so it made me think about rain can be used to represent a certain theme. I researched into this and found Tecsia Evans, who is a psychologist said that "When it gets dark and dreary out, some people definitely have more susceptibility to feeling lonely or down, It's pretty common to see a change in mood -- such as feeling sadness or lower self-esteem". This got me thinking about whether I could use rain in certain scenes to show sadness, so I will experiment with that.
I then went onto creating sketches based on what I saw in these films, I started off by drawing a sketch of Charlie facing outside his window whilst it rains, this was to show his sadness. Why he is also facing out and the camera isn't looking in is because that would mean the outside of the house of the house would have to be textured, so it would be easier to have the camera facing Charlie from behind. I then tried out sketches of Charlie facing outside from behind the curtain, but only his eye was visible, this was to keep in with the theme of seclusion. I also tried out a sketch about death and Charlie's faces being close, this was only a rough sketch and I will do a more detailed version if my team are happy with this shot.
