Tone Death Day 17

Date: 31/01/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm, 6pm-7:45pm (7 hours 45 minutes) What I did: Today I focused on getting some more quotes for journal from the books I got from the library yesterday and adding them to my previous entries. This was very helpful in letting me reference and back up what I'm saying rather than it seeming uninformed, I will continue to look through and reference these books and anything that has helped me in the future. Today I mainly focused on getting the second act of the storyboard completed, how I aimed to improve fro m yesterday was to keep my sketches rough and not to add any unneeded detail. I achieved this by making Charlie a silhouette instead of trying to draw his features. I drew a piece that was inspired by the editing from the "Sherlock" series where a camera would cut through the wall to reveal a new scene. I didn't go as drastic as this but I made it so a door would be between Charlie and death to show both of ...

Tone Death Day 16

Date: 30/01/2019 Hours: 8:45am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm 6:15pm-8:15pm (7 hours 45 minutes) What I did: Today I went to the library to get two books. The reason why is so I can learn more about critical thinking or drawing for animation and also so I can reference and back up my points with quotes from the books. For example I have to think carefully about how Charlie walks and the reason why is because the book "Drawing for Animation" says that "By watching the way somebody walks it is possible to know their age, sex, weight, mood and character." . I will have to do more research into Charlie's walk cycles in the animation if I want to express his current mood correctly, I will keep referring to the book to aid me in the future.  In the other book "Critical Thinking Skills" I will continue to use this book and why is because it will help me with critical reflection so I can create the best journal I can. An area that I need to improve on with c...

Tone Death Day 15

Date: 29/01/2019 Hours: 8:30am-10:30am, 11am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, 6:30pm-8:30pm (8 hours) What I did: Today I researched into some points I made earlier in the journal, the reason why is because it's important for me to back up what I say with quotes from other so my work doesn't seem uninformed. After this I continued with creating possible thumbnails for the storyboard, I aimed to keep the sketches rough, why is so I wouldn't take an unnecessary amount of time to create them. Since I kept them rough I didn't add any background details and could just focus on what I supposed to be shown, in the more detailed pieces I will make sure to include the background. In a particular sketch I wanted to focus on testing myself on lighting, how I did this was by having reference to look. I am proud with how this piece turned out, however the shading on his face didn't match the background so i will improve in that area. I also made a shot where the camera was peaking through the...

Tone Death Day 14

Date: 28/01/2019 Hours: 8:45am-12:45pm, 1pm-4pm (7 hours) What I did: Today I focused on sketching out possible thumbnails for the storyboard. I aimed to use what I learnt from watching the films and put it into concepts of my own, along with this I did sketches of Charlie, the reason why was to get some more facial expressions of him and also use colours to further express his current emotion. My first sketch of Charlie is him surrounded by darkness and only half his face is seen, the reason why I did this was because I wanted to try and convey the sense of him being secluded and lonely thus him being surrounded by darkness. I will continue to work on my lighting since for this sketch I wasn't too happy with how it turned out, I will do more research to help to get some references.  After his encounter with death, Charlie wakes up in the morning. How I aimed to portray it was that the camera would get up with him, this was something I was inspired to do after watch "Un...

Tone Death Day 13

Date: 27/01/2019 Hours: 8am-9:28am, 9:31am-13:34pm, 13:48pm-14:36pm, 16:17pm-18:58pm (9 hours) What I did: Today I focused on watching more movies for inspiration for camera techniques/ shots. I firstly looked at "Under the Shadow", the reason why I chose this film is that it takes primarily in an apartment complex so it would be a good place for camera shots. A lot of camera shots look through doorways, this gives the sense that the viewer is the camera, looking into these people's lives and makes it more personal. Some camera shots also get up close to characters making the scene feel more on focused on them rather than looking at what's going on around them. I decided to look back at "Mr Robot", the reason why is because it was a good place to look at for lighting and camera angles, since it mostly uses still shots and that's what I wish to do for the animation. Shots had the main character, Elliot, towards the right of the screen surrounded by d...

Tone Death Day 12

Date: 26/01/2019 Hours: 8:22am-10:55am, 11:13am-12:25pm, 12:37pm-13:08pm, 13:11pm-15:26pm, 15:30pm-17:30pm (8 hours 30 minutes) What I did: Today I focused on watching films, the reason why is that I wanted to get inspiration for possible camera shots and techniques that could be used in our animation. I also wanted to look at colour theory and how some films use colour to convey emotions or certain themes. I watched "Blade Runner 2049", the reason why is due to camera angles/techniques and its use of colour. For example the film uses mainly still shots and rarely pans, I sketched ideas I had for thumbnails whilst watching the film. "Blade Runner 2049" also uses colour well, such as whenever "K", the protagonist, is given information or a clue there is a golden light or tint in the room. I learned about this from watching a video from "wolfcrow" talking about the film making and cinematography techniques of "Blade Runner 2049". They...

Tone Death Day 11

Date: 25/01/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, 6:30pm-7pm (7 hours) What I did:Today I focused on making some final adjustments to Todd's turnabout, why I did this was because based on feedback I changed his hand so it was then bigger and easier to model. How I did this get reference of a hand where all the fingers were spaced out, the reason why is because if all the fingers were spaced out it would be easier to see each individual finger and thus easier to model. This resulted in the hand being larger, however that did not affect the overall look. I also made this change to Charlie since his hand was in the same situation so I made the change to his hands too. After making the adjustments I went onto finishing off the initial thumbnails for the storyboard. I set out to sketch the outline, the reason why was since these were the initial concepts it would make more sense to keep them rough since the likelihood of them changing would be very high. I managed to sketch out t...
