What I did: Today I focused on watching films, the reason why is that I wanted to get inspiration for possible camera shots and techniques that could be used in our animation. I also wanted to look at colour theory and how some films use colour to convey emotions or certain themes.
I watched "Blade Runner 2049", the reason why is due to camera angles/techniques and its use of colour. For example the film uses mainly still shots and rarely pans, I sketched ideas I had for thumbnails whilst watching the film. "Blade Runner 2049" also uses colour well, such as whenever "K", the protagonist, is given information or a clue there is a golden light or tint in the room. I learned about this from watching a video from "wolfcrow" talking about the film making and cinematography techniques of "Blade Runner 2049". They said that "yellow is information, realisation or simply where K finds clues". For example, when K goes to Vegas he finds Deckard where he learns more about the truth there is an orange colour, at the library there is a yellow light since the location is a place of knowledge and history.
I then watched "The Thing", the reason why was because since it's mainly based inside a base so it would be good to learn camera techniques. I learned how the camera tends to follow the characters and pan through doorways to show the rooms in the base. So I felt maybe I could do that for when Charlie goes to the door to collect his letter. I noticed how the camera tends to look and pan through doorway giving this sense that the camera is a person rather than an object, I will try to experiment with this in the storyboard.
I also watched "2001: a space odyssey". Why I watched this was because of how characters tend to appear at the centre of the screen, so I wanted to get inspiration for possible camera angles. I looked at how rooms tend to be colour coordinated, so I thought about the colour of Charlie's kitchen could be vastly different from the one of his music room. Similar to Blade Runner 2049 this film also uses a lot of still shots. I also thought about its ambient music and if it could be incorporated into animation. Also, characters tend to be centred towards the middle of the screen, this is called one-point perspective. An article describes this as "a way of crafting cinematic shots with near-perfect symmetry" and "disorienting the viewer and creating tension". I will aim to incorporate this into the animation.
Finally, I watched Mr Robot and the reason why was because of its camera angles and lighting. Whilst the main character, Elliot, is hacking the lighting is dark so the camera only focuses on him and not anything surrounding him. I also noticed how when the character discovers something disgusting the music starts to become distorted, so I thought about how when Charlie becomes deaf the music becomes distorted or fades out entirely. Also some camera shots peer through doorways, this secludes the character and makes them seem isolated.
I then played Resident Evil, the reason why was because I wanted to get some possible camera angles for the hallway and since Resident Evil uses locked camera angles it would be a good place for inspiration. How I captured images was to use the capture screenshot feature on the PlayStation to then come to later for reference. Resident Evil was a good place to look since it makes the player feel secluded whilst they are in the mansion and seclusion is a theme I want to capture in the animation.
