Tone Death Day 16

Date: 30/01/2019
Hours: 8:45am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm 6:15pm-8:15pm (7 hours 45 minutes)
What I did: Today I went to the library to get two books. The reason why is so I can learn more about critical thinking or drawing for animation and also so I can reference and back up my points with quotes from the books. For example I have to think carefully about how Charlie walks and the reason why is because the book "Drawing for Animation" says that "By watching the way somebody walks it is possible to know their age, sex, weight, mood and character." . I will have to do more research into Charlie's walk cycles in the animation if I want to express his current mood correctly, I will keep referring to the book to aid me in the future.

In the other book "Critical Thinking Skills" I will continue to use this book and why is because it will help me with critical reflection so I can create the best journal I can. An area that I need to improve on with critical reflection is the ability to point out what I also didn't do well doing the module, how it and why it didn't go well and what I can do in the future to change that. The book talks about analysing your own role and says to think about "the impact or consequences of what you did or didn't do - and why;", I definitely should be thinking about the consequences of what I have been doing whether good or bad, this is an area that I haven't focused on much so I will learn to think about this in the future.

I then went onto doing more thumbnails for the storyboard, today me and my teammate who is also focusing on the storyboard we both decided to review what we have created so far, the reason why was to see if what we've created is structured with the story and concise. When looking at it we noticed that in between some thumbnails we needed to add another, why is because it doesn't make sense so adding another would give the storyboard more structure. For example in one thumbnail Charlie is going to his table in the kitchen eat, then he runs to the music rooms. Without anything in between these two we're not explaining what is happening in between these two shots. So how I added more structure to this was by adding adding two extra thumbnails; one of Charlie's toast and him picking up his coffee. Why these two specific thumbnails was to show that we abut to have his breakfast then realising about his new piano. I am happy with adding these two since it shows what we wanted to show at the start, however, I spent too much time drawing the shot of his toast. The consequences of this is that I took away time doing this from creating more thumbnails, in the future I will make sure I don't try to add detail when it isn't needed right now.

In Masterclass me and a friend have been modelling a character in ZBrush. Doing this model has been very helpful in letting me understanding anatomy better. Drawing it is helpful, however looking at it in a 3D space lets me understand it better, why is because looking at it from different helps me understand how muscles work better than drawing them. I feel that the character is getting too bloated, why I say this is because their back is too muscly and so is the chest, next week we should reduce the size since that will help us get back on track with it instead of having to expand every other area so it fits. The arms for the character didn't loom very proportionate, so what we did was look at reference to help us understand the anatomy of the human arm, this helped vastly and also allowed me to understand of the arm more. I will use what I have learnt in future pieces.

At home I chose to watch "Sherlock", and the reason why is because of how it's edited to show what Sherlock Holmes sees. For example, it'll show what he's searching on his phone, zoom in on details of other character and label those details. Also the camera will clip through walls to reveal different and I thought this would be interesting to do with the animation. I will experiment with this possibility or talk to my team if it would be good to include.

I also watched another of "Death in Paradise" , why was to see if I could learn anything more about camera. I saw that the camera focus from character to v character, such as it would blur out the character that they didn't want to viewer to focus on. Maybe this could be done whilst Charlie is talking to death, however they will have to be in the same shot. I have to think about how I want this animation to be shot whilst also communicating with my teammate so our work is consistent with each others.

Tone Death Day 11

Date: 25/01/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, 6:30pm-7pm (7 hours) What I did:Today I focused on making some final adjustments to Todd's turnabout, why I did this was because based on feedback I changed his hand so it was then bigger and easier to model. How I did this get reference of a hand where all the fingers were spaced out, the reason why is because if all the fingers were spaced out it would be easier to see each individual finger and thus easier to model. This resulted in the hand being larger, however that did not affect the overall look. I also made this change to Charlie since his hand was in the same situation so I made the change to his hands too. After making the adjustments I went onto finishing off the initial thumbnails for the storyboard. I set out to sketch the outline, the reason why was since these were the initial concepts it would make more sense to keep them rough since the likelihood of them changing would be very high. I managed to sketch out t...

Tone Death Day 2

Date: 16/01/2019 Hours: 9am-12am, 9pm-10pm (4 hours) What I did: Today I focused on using the moodboards I created the previous and applying what I learnt to my work. I start by sketching out possible facial expressions for Charlie, Why I did this was to get an understanding on how his face would look in whilst he is conveying different, such as what position and angle would his nose be at. Creating these sketches helped me get a better understanding of how to use facial expressions to convey certain emotions. I also went onto creating full body of Charlie to get a visual understanding of his appearance, I used the another moodboard I created looking at stylised characters and used that as a reference for when creating Charlie. I started off by creating silhouettes, why I did this was to get his shape down before trying to do any detailed pieces. I then went onto making a more detailed full body of Charlie after deciding on a silhouette. Areas that I feel that I could have improv...

Tone Death Day 18

Date: 1/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm (6 hours) What I did: Today I focused on starting and finishing the turnaround for the older version of Charlie, when he's 85. The reason why I started to now was because me and my teammate have started creating for thumbnails for the final act of the animation and it focuses on the old version of Charlie, I thought it would be best if I focused on creating the young version of Charlie and Todd for when doing the first two acts. However, I am not sure if I would have taken less time if I did all the characters and turnarounds at the same time, nonetheless, I manged to create this turnaround much faster than the other two. The reason why is that I copied the shape of young Charlie and then altered it to show that he had gotten older, examples would be that he has shrunk somewhat in his old age, wrinkles and his hair is gone only leaving the outline. I am pleased with the quality and also how fast I was able to finish the turn...
