What I did: Today I focused on watching more movies for inspiration for camera techniques/ shots. I firstly looked at "Under the Shadow", the reason why I chose this film is that it takes primarily in an apartment complex so it would be a good place for camera shots. A lot of camera shots look through doorways, this gives the sense that the viewer is the camera, looking into these people's lives and makes it more personal. Some camera shots also get up close to characters making the scene feel more on focused on them rather than looking at what's going on around them.
I decided to look back at "Mr Robot", the reason why is because it was a good place to look at for lighting and camera angles, since it mostly uses still shots and that's what I wish to do for the animation. Shots had the main character, Elliot, towards the right of the screen surrounded by darkness, this making him seem lonely, secluded and so the focus is primarily on Elliot. Some shots also had characters leaning on the wall, why I point this out is because it can be a use of leading lines where the walls leads the viewers eye towards the character. I also pointed out when they camera zooms in on character's hands, why is because it draws the focus towards what they are doing and could be used for whenever Charlie or Todd is playing the piano. The camera would also zoom in slowly onto a character whilst they were doing a speech, adding depth to what they are saying and drawing the focus to them. There would be camera cuts between characters talking where they would be on opposite sides of the screen, why I felt this was significant was that it could be done when Charlie and death are talking to show distance between them. Some shots would also show a room that was illuminated by a small amount of light, making the character look alone and secluded.
I finally went onto watching "The Martian". Techniques the camera use are similar to other films I've watched where it'll through a window, the reason why I keep pointing out this subject is because it's something I want to experiment with on the animation is making the viewer feel as if they are the camera. How I could do this is by making the camera look through doorways, windows and small gaps in doors or furniture, making the viewer feel they're getting an inside look into Charlie's life rather than watching from a distance. The camera will tend to follow the character, adding to that sense of the viewer being the camera. A scene had the main character looking into the mirror and this made me think of an instance where Charlie could wash his face and look into the mirror after become deaf. Then mixing that with what I learnt from "Mr Robot" and make sound distorted.
After I went onto writing down ideas that watching these films gave me. For example similar to "Blade Runner 2049" I could use colours to represent certain themes. An example could be the light turning to a more red colour to show Charlie's anger or dark to represents deaths presence. I will continue to write down more ideas that come to my mind from the notes I've written and will go over them with my team to see if any interest them.
