Tone Death Day 23

Date: 6/02/2019
Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm, 6:15pm-8:15pm (8 hours)
What I did: Today I focused on finalising the thumbnails for the storyboard.

Before starting any drawings I looked into some more people that suffered through adversity and still made an impact. I looked at Ludwig van Beethoven, the reason why is because he fits the theme of the animation very well since in his life his hearing started to fade. However, that did not stop him from composing and playing in public. I also looked into Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks who were both activists in the civil rights movement. Rosa Parks was famous for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on the bus, which was pivotal in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Martin Luther King Jr. led the boycott, he was also very famous for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. The reason why I wanted to look at these two is because of the work they have done in the past despite the time and still manged to make major differences.

After this I went onto creating concepts for how death would show these people to Charlie. I was inspired by the scene in "A Christmas Carol" from 2009 where the ghost of Christmas past changes their face to show people from Scrooge's past. Since where death's face would be is dark and you can't see their face for most of the animation I made it so that their faces would appear from the dark to show to Charlie. I drew Ludwig van Beethoven, Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks so far, if my team is happy with how they appear I will continue with other people I have looked into. When I drew Beethoven I drew him in two different styles, the reason why is because one fitted the style of the other characters and one looked more realistic. I will ask my team to see which one is better, however I believe the one that fits the style is better.

In masterclass I continued to work on the character model. We decided to tone down the characters size, the reason why was because they were getting bigger and bigger resulting in us expanding in other areas and making the character look bloated. Looking at references we were able to add some more details better than before, such as ribs. When we added ribs before they didn't look the same as a humans, even though it's a creature I would still like to learn how ribs look. Going back to them and having reference helped me greatly in understanding its structure and will help me in the future with character concepts.

At home I focused on doing more sketches for death, the reason why is because I wanted to try an alternate way of them showing Charlie people who suffered through adversity. This way would be that death would lift up their cloak and underneath would be that person, I will ask my team to see which style they like better. I drew an alternate way of them appearing into the scene, why is because the piano in the first act is quite small so it would hard for death to come out of. So I made it so that they would come out a portal, this would allow them to come out from behind the piano. I also test out different ways for them to show their face, would it be full on or just a small part of their face? I prefer a small part and why is because it leaves the viewer to think what the rest may look like. In the final shots of the animation death opens up their cloak to then consume Charlie, I tested out whether chains would come out to then grab Charlie, these chains would represent his sins. I will ask my team to see if they like that idea.

Tone Death Day 11

Date: 25/01/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, 6:30pm-7pm (7 hours) What I did:Today I focused on making some final adjustments to Todd's turnabout, why I did this was because based on feedback I changed his hand so it was then bigger and easier to model. How I did this get reference of a hand where all the fingers were spaced out, the reason why is because if all the fingers were spaced out it would be easier to see each individual finger and thus easier to model. This resulted in the hand being larger, however that did not affect the overall look. I also made this change to Charlie since his hand was in the same situation so I made the change to his hands too. After making the adjustments I went onto finishing off the initial thumbnails for the storyboard. I set out to sketch the outline, the reason why was since these were the initial concepts it would make more sense to keep them rough since the likelihood of them changing would be very high. I managed to sketch out t...

Tone Death Day 2

Date: 16/01/2019 Hours: 9am-12am, 9pm-10pm (4 hours) What I did: Today I focused on using the moodboards I created the previous and applying what I learnt to my work. I start by sketching out possible facial expressions for Charlie, Why I did this was to get an understanding on how his face would look in whilst he is conveying different, such as what position and angle would his nose be at. Creating these sketches helped me get a better understanding of how to use facial expressions to convey certain emotions. I also went onto creating full body of Charlie to get a visual understanding of his appearance, I used the another moodboard I created looking at stylised characters and used that as a reference for when creating Charlie. I started off by creating silhouettes, why I did this was to get his shape down before trying to do any detailed pieces. I then went onto making a more detailed full body of Charlie after deciding on a silhouette. Areas that I feel that I could have improv...

Tone Death Day 18

Date: 1/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm (6 hours) What I did: Today I focused on starting and finishing the turnaround for the older version of Charlie, when he's 85. The reason why I started to now was because me and my teammate have started creating for thumbnails for the final act of the animation and it focuses on the old version of Charlie, I thought it would be best if I focused on creating the young version of Charlie and Todd for when doing the first two acts. However, I am not sure if I would have taken less time if I did all the characters and turnarounds at the same time, nonetheless, I manged to create this turnaround much faster than the other two. The reason why is that I copied the shape of young Charlie and then altered it to show that he had gotten older, examples would be that he has shrunk somewhat in his old age, wrinkles and his hair is gone only leaving the outline. I am pleased with the quality and also how fast I was able to finish the turn...
