Tone Death Day 22

Date: 5/02/2019
Hours: 8:30am-10:30am, 11am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm, 6:15pm-8:45pm (8 hours)
What I did: Today I focused on continuing with creating thumbnails and also touching up the turnaround of Charlie when he's 85.

Why I had to touch up the turnaround was the I received some more feedback about how his feet still didn't look correct. After revisiting the feet I checked in again with how they look and they wee happy with how they look now. When researching the feet yesterday I should've thought more about the position of Charlie's feet, why is because this cost time today to work on it more when I should've got it done yesterday. Now when I research in the future I will make sure it is relevant to what I am doing and it helps me vastly.

After this I continued to work on the storyboard, I started off by drawing both Charlie and death facing the screen. The reason why is because I saw that from "Death in Paradise" and said I would try it out. I asked a teammate for their opinion on what is better, them facing to the side or the screen, they said we could possibly add both styles to the storyboard so I am happy with that. I also did some more sketches for death, in one particular sketch I had them off the side, surrounded by a dark background with a red glow on the side. The reason why I chose a red colour was because death was about to kill Charlie so a red glow would represent blood. I may test out more possible colours for lights on death for certain scenarios, however if I have the time. The reason why is because I want to focus on getting the storyboard complete before doing anything that isn't too relevant to what I'm doing.

At home I focused on looking into people who have suffered through adversity. The reason why is because the point of the story is how Charlie never tried to do anything even though he was deaf and wasted his life feeling sorry for himself. In the final act of the animation death shows Charlie people who suffered through adversity and still managed to have an impact on others and themselves despite their situation. I've looked into people such as Thomas Edison and Vincent Van Gogh, I will look at Beethoven since he fits the theme of the animation well. I also wanted to look at people who I haven't heard of before or haven't received much representation, at least from what I've seen. The reason why is because it's an opportunity for me to learn more about other people and the work they've done and also show people who maybe aren't widely well known. I looked at Marsha P. Johnson who was a Gay Liberation and AIDS activists, she also helped establish STAR House which was a shelter for gay and trans street kids in 1972.

I also watched some more "Death in Paradise", I noticed how the camera would rise above an object to then show the characters. The reason why I point this out because it got me thinking about how the camera could rise above the piano to then show Charlie playing. I also picked up on the ambient music, however this won't be very important for the storyboard but I would like to bring it up with the team to see what they think of the idea of adding it to the animation. Tomorrow I will continue to research in people who suffered through adversity and also continue with the storyboard.

Tone Death Day 11

Date: 25/01/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-4pm, 6:30pm-7pm (7 hours) What I did:Today I focused on making some final adjustments to Todd's turnabout, why I did this was because based on feedback I changed his hand so it was then bigger and easier to model. How I did this get reference of a hand where all the fingers were spaced out, the reason why is because if all the fingers were spaced out it would be easier to see each individual finger and thus easier to model. This resulted in the hand being larger, however that did not affect the overall look. I also made this change to Charlie since his hand was in the same situation so I made the change to his hands too. After making the adjustments I went onto finishing off the initial thumbnails for the storyboard. I set out to sketch the outline, the reason why was since these were the initial concepts it would make more sense to keep them rough since the likelihood of them changing would be very high. I managed to sketch out t...

Tone Death Day 2

Date: 16/01/2019 Hours: 9am-12am, 9pm-10pm (4 hours) What I did: Today I focused on using the moodboards I created the previous and applying what I learnt to my work. I start by sketching out possible facial expressions for Charlie, Why I did this was to get an understanding on how his face would look in whilst he is conveying different, such as what position and angle would his nose be at. Creating these sketches helped me get a better understanding of how to use facial expressions to convey certain emotions. I also went onto creating full body of Charlie to get a visual understanding of his appearance, I used the another moodboard I created looking at stylised characters and used that as a reference for when creating Charlie. I started off by creating silhouettes, why I did this was to get his shape down before trying to do any detailed pieces. I then went onto making a more detailed full body of Charlie after deciding on a silhouette. Areas that I feel that I could have improv...

Tone Death Day 18

Date: 1/02/2019 Hours: 8:30am-12pm, 1pm-2:30pm, 3pm-4pm (6 hours) What I did: Today I focused on starting and finishing the turnaround for the older version of Charlie, when he's 85. The reason why I started to now was because me and my teammate have started creating for thumbnails for the final act of the animation and it focuses on the old version of Charlie, I thought it would be best if I focused on creating the young version of Charlie and Todd for when doing the first two acts. However, I am not sure if I would have taken less time if I did all the characters and turnarounds at the same time, nonetheless, I manged to create this turnaround much faster than the other two. The reason why is that I copied the shape of young Charlie and then altered it to show that he had gotten older, examples would be that he has shrunk somewhat in his old age, wrinkles and his hair is gone only leaving the outline. I am pleased with the quality and also how fast I was able to finish the turn...
