What I did: Today I focused on finalising the designs for the kid and Charlie then moving onto creating thumbnails for the storyboard. I worked to get out something close final pieces for both the kid and Charlie, the reason why is because I wanted to get a detailed visualisation of these two characters before moving onto the storyboard. When creating concepts for the kid I learned a bit more about how the anatomy could be for the style we are going for so I applied this to my concept for Charlie, this resulted in the art style similarities between the two being closer.
A problem I ran into with the kid was that his hands appeared too small, hands have been an area that I have had difficulty with for a long time. What I did to help myself realise the size of them was focus on them a make bigger sketches to help me understand the proportions and look into the anatomy of the human hand. I will continue to research into the anatomy and create sketches before creating my final piece of the kid. With Charlie this wasn't as big of a problem but I will still do research so my final concept for him is also the best it can be.
When making sketches I also did a small sketch for how death would maybe look, the reason why I did this was to look into the human skeleton and understand it more since it's very important to understand it and how it works. However, I will not go on with creating concepts for death, and why is because someone else is focusing on creating concepts for death. Also, my design felt more light-hearted and I don't believe the it would fit with the overall theme of the animation.
When moving onto the storyboard I had notes beside me that another team member created going through the story, this helped me a lot with visualising how each thumbnail could look. When going through the storyboard I imagined in my head how the animation would play out, the reason why I did this was because it helped me understand how each shot could look and how the animation would play. I made annotations for each thumbnail so that when I show it to my team it will help them understand what is happening in each shot. I ended before death appears and the reason why is since someone else is working on death and they haven't finalised his design yet, so in the meantime I will focus more on understanding hand anatomy and other possible shots for the storyboard.
Why creating the storyboard is important is because it's a "pre-production visualising tool that helps to define the look of a film. And it is a way of coming up with new visual and narrative ideas before production or shooting begins." this meaning it will help me and my teammate visualise how the animation can play out before we've started putting cameras into the scenes.
